After a long, tiring weekend the last thing Calder wanted to do was sit through a lecture. It wasn't even a performing arts lecture, it was for one of his general education classes - American History. He might be a top student when it came to his arts courses, but the rest of them just felt like a total waste of time. However, after an unpleasant meeting with the professor whose class he was currently attending, he came to realize that the wider background he had, the better prepared he could be for whatever roles he came upon. As much as he disliked him, Professor Seymour did make valid points. Cale just wasn't a fan of being wrong when it came to his future. He just found it ironic how a Scotsman was teaching American history. Perhaps there wasn't enough Scottish history to devote an entire class to it. Sliding into his usual seat near the center of the room, Cale dropped his bag and pulled out his notebook. His eyes found their way to the clock, where they normally stayed for the duration of the class. "Somewhere else you need to be, Mr. Hennessey?" Drat, spotted. "Actually, there are other things I could be doing." Like rehearsing for the spring production. Opening night was only a couple weeks away, unfortunately too close to finals. His plate was filling up mighty quick. Seymour didn't offer a retaliation, simply shook his head and pulled out his lecture notes while the rest of the class filed in.
Once class began, Cale slumped down in his chair and took notes half-heartedly. Professor Seymour was talking too fast for him to keep up - not that he was trying. After a few minutes of re-capping what they had talked about last week he dropped the bomb that they were going to start their final projects of the semester. Cale's jaw nearly hit the floor. A project?! Was he kidding?! "But finals are in a month!" The words escaped before he could stop them but they were met with murmurs of agreement. No one liked end-of-the-year assignments. At least not ones that would take extended periods of time. "I am well aware of that, which is why you will be working with a partner. I've chosen your matches, teaming you up according to strengths. Hopefully you guys won't blow it." Cale sat back. He guessed working with someone else was better than going it alone - as long as they weren't a slacker. He wanted to get this assignment done and over with ASAP. "After I announce who you are paired with, you have the remainder of the class to get together and talk about what you are going to do. I'll pass out the assignment in a moment." Calder paid no attention to whom the other pairs were, only caring about himself. "Cale, you are with Kahlan." Kahlan? Looking around, Cale tried to spot his partner. He couldn't recall a Kahlan in the class, but that wasn't surprising. Then he saw a dark-haired girl making eye contact with him. He waved, acknowledging they were partners. He thought he could probably live with this arrangement.

Kahlan was a girl that genuinely enjoyed school. She had always been very intelligent and had always done very well in her studies. Even when she had been in high school and had gotten a bit out of control, she had somehow always managed to keep her grades up. How she had done it she wasn’t sure, but she had, and that was all that mattered. Now that she was here in college, Kahlan was determined to do her best and go on to do what it was that she needed to. One wouldn’t think that being an English major would be so challenging, but it certainly was, especially since she had recently taken up the double major in history. She had a small little dream of being a writer, which was where her English degree came from, even though she didn’t technically need one. The history? That was all for the fun of things. Her mother thought she was rather crazy to be pursuing things as worthless as writing and history when she was so brilliant and could have likely gotten into any school in the country. She could have been a lawyer like her mother or a doctor or anything. Instead of all those prestigious things, though, she chose English and the prospect of writing stories. Where her mother was slightly annoyed, her father had never been anything but supportive. That was why she was daddy’s little girl. Kahlan walked into the classroom of her favorite professor, and one of her favorite classes at that, and took her usual seat in the front against the window. She was, of course, the first to arrive in the class, and while she waited she stared out the window, watching the students as they walked by outside that beautiful day. Usually she would have her nose in her latest read, but with finals coming up she was forcing herself to not pick up one and to keep herself focused on school, not that she ever really had a problem with that sort of thing. Soon the rest of the students had flooded into the classroom and Mr. Seymour was at the front of the class, starting with a recap of the class before, Kahlan’s pen hovering over her paper to start with the note taking that was sure to come. But it seemed that he had something else in mind. A group project. "But finals are in a month!" Kahlan glanced over her shoulder for the speaker, hearing the groans and complaints already being issued from her classmates. Kahlan listened at the instruction and then waited for her name to be called to see who it was she was going to be stuck with this time. "Cale, you are with Kahlan." At the sound of her name she looked around, spotting the guy who had complained about the project to start with. He waved at her, which said that she had guessed right on who she was going to be working with. She glanced up at the professor as he finished up with the last minute instructions, then dismissed them to get started. Kay gathered her things and walked towards the guy she had been partnered with, sitting down next to him. “Howdy, partner,” she said with a smile, unable to resist. “I’m Kahlan.” She withdrew the paper her notebook and read over it again. Once she finished she looked back up at him. “So where should we begin?” She was ready to jump in and get going, though she might just be the only one. But again, Kahlan liked school, and she really did enjoy group projects. She liked meeting new people.

Calder read over the assignment Mr. Seymour had passed out while he waited for them to be let go for the rest of class. It didn't seem too difficult, just a bit time-consuming. Then again, he was the sort of person who thought he did really well on an exam and ends up failing. So, thinking the assignment would be simple might end with a slap in the face. Good thing he had a partner to hopefully prevent that from happening. There weren't too many specific requirements so they had a great deal of free reign. He liked that. Being an actor, he had a creative side, which was why the world of hard logic and fact was so difficult for him to live in. Artsy projects were more his thing, as un-masculine as that might sound. Starting to develop some sort of idea for their assignment, they were finally dismissed to get together with their partners and start brainstorming. A few students asked if they were allowed to head to the library, no doubt skipping out on class early. Seymour knew better, but allowed them to leave anyway. Cale saw Kahlan getting out of her chair and head for him, meaning he didn't have to move, which was all right with him. In the few seconds it took her to walk over, Cale had opened to a blank notebook page and was writing a header as she took the chair beside him. "Hey, I'm Calder. But, everyone just calls me Cale." He returned her smile, folding his notebook back so just the blank page was showing. He waited for her to finish reading the paper, formulating some more ideas when she jumped the gun and asked where they should begin. "Well, I don't know how you feel about elaborate presentations, but I was thinking we could do something with the Old West. It's an easy topic with a lot of maneuvering space. We could dress up in time-appropriate garb for the presentation." It was also about the only topic that had interested him all semester and he had easy access to costumes, or at least the items to make them. "Even though I'm not too keen on having a project this close to the end of the year, I must admit that we need to do a bang up job or else I'll be re-taking it in the fall." His meeting with Seymour the previous day had alerted him to that. He never failed anything in his life and to tell his parents he needed to repeat a class would just blow their minds - almost literally speaking. No, he couldn't go home with that news. "So, what do you think? I promise I won't be offended if you say no." He chuckled, knowing he had a bit of a tendency to take over in things regarding the arts. His Old West idea incorporated a bit of acting, which would make it a lot easier to get through.

Kahlan was good in school. She did well in just about everything, especially when it came to all things history and English. She excelled at them. Quite honestly, she enjoyed doing projects. It was a lot easier to get engaged in things and usually ended up being a lot of fun, so really, Kay was quite optimistic about this. However, as they were just getting started, she had no ideas at all about how to approach this, in which case she deferred to her partner. "Well, I don't know how you feel about elaborate presentations, but I was thinking we could do something with the Old West. It's an easy topic with a lot of maneuvering space. We could dress up in time-appropriate garb for the presentation." Kahlan was definitely intrigued. She had never really been a performer or anything like that, she was more of a closet theater geek, never having had to drive to actually get involved in it. She was always up for something new and different, though. "Even though I'm not too keen on having a project this close to the end of the year, I must admit that we need to do a bang up job or else I'll be re-taking it in the fall." Kahlan frowned. She had never come close to failing something in her life, so she honestly didn’t know that feeling. “Well you’re in luck. Because I’m your partner, and I’m awesome.” She smiled. "So, what do you think? I promise I won't be offended if you say no." Kahlan laughed softly. “I think it’s great and could definitely be a lot of fun.” She smiled, then continued. “It’s also a lot more than I had, so I’m all for it.” She was teasing, kind of. Had she had enough time to think about the project she likely would have come up with something, but with an already great idea, why try to come up with something of her own. “I hope you have access to an awesome costume department or something, cause I have no idea where to find costumes.” She stopped a minute and thought about that. “Actually… I could be wrong about that. There are a lot of people that owe Daddy favors…” It was a side thought. Her father was a pretty important person, and if there was something that they needed for this, she was sure she could find some sort of means to get what they needed. “So where should we start, oh mastermind of the Old West.” It was his idea, after all.

The fact that Calder dislike history, and Seymour in particular, made it a lot more difficult to get enthusiastic about a project for he class. However, if he could turn it into something related to theatre, in even the smallest of ways, it would make it bearable. He also thought he had a pretty good partner to work with just form the couple minutes they've spent together. He knew he couldn't just take over though without her input, so after relaying his ideas, he waited for her input. A smile appeared at her interest in the idea. Perhaps this would be easier than he thought. Normally, he had the luck of getting someone with creative differences and they spent more time bickering than actually getting down to work. Her cooperation would cut down a lot of that wasted time. However, he wasn't shutting out her ideas if she brought something up at a later time once they got the ball rolling. Even for him it sometimes took a start to something for other ideas to strike, hopefully to enhance rather than alter the initial plan. "Okay cool. At least we have a starting place now." He jotted down a few notes on his paper. "I do actually. I'm a drama student, which is why history isn't quite my forte... But I can get pretty much anything we might need, or material to make whatever we could need." While Kahlan continued talking, Cale made a mental and physical note to raid the storage room off the auditorium where most of the props and costumes were kept that weren't being used for the on going production. "Oh yeah? What is he like in the mob or something?" They way she talked, that was how it sounded. In which case, he was very intrigued with this girl, not that he wasn't already. He was getting along with her easily, which would certainly make this assignment go a lot smoother. Kahlan then asked where they should begin and Cale suddenly drew a blank. "Uh....well... I guess we should decide what from the time period we want to specifically focus on." Cale unfolded his notebook and went back through his notes, searching for something they could turn into a living re-enactment sort of project. "We could do something like... life in an old west town. The differences between men and women. He flipped a couple pages. "Or maybe the problems that were created between the Native Americans and townspeople. Or we could take a more criminal approach and talk about the gunslingers and bank robbers, talk about Jesse James and Billy the Kid...et cetera, et cetera." He looked at his partner, allowing her the chance to input her own thoughts. But then added as an after thought, "I guess if we wanted to dress up it would really depend on what costumes we can find. Maybe we should take a field trip to the drama department." He suggested. It would get them out of class but they would still be working on their assignment. Win-win.

"I do actually. I'm a drama student, which is why history isn't quite my forte... But I can get pretty much anything we might need, or material to make whatever we could need." That was good to hear. At least they would have the means to possibly accomplish this project and do a somewhat good job on it. She wasn’t kidding when she said her dad could possibly provide them with what they needed, though. "Oh yeah? What is he like in the mob or something?" That was entirely too funny and she had to cover her mouth with her hand to quiet her laugh. “No, no. Daddy’s an architect. He just happens to know a lot of people.” Her dad was somewhat of a celebrity in the building world. His buildings were amazing and people all around wanted to get him to design for him. Kay had always been a daddy’s girl, being closer with her father than she ever was with her mother. She could ask him for anything and she knew without a doubt that he would get it for her. But she would only do that if it turned out that they needed anything. She asked for his ideas on where to start. "Uh....well... I guess we should decide what from the time period we want to specifically focus on." Kahlan nodded and watched as he opened his notebook and searched through his notes for certain things. "Or maybe the problems that were created between the Native Americans and townspeople. Or we could take a more criminal approach and talk about the gunslingers and bank robbers, talk about Jesse James and Billy the Kid...et cetera, et cetera." Kahlan had to bite her lip to keep from laughing because she was honestly picturing Calder dressed up as an Indian and it was quite hilarious. It took her a moment to recover from that thought. "I guess if we wanted to dress up it would really depend on what costumes we can find. Maybe we should take a field trip to the drama department." Kahlan thought that was a good idea. “Alright, sure. I guess that works, though I do like your idea of doing criminals. That could be real fun!” There were some ideas starting to form in her head. Kahlan got to her feet and walked up to Mr. Seymour to ask his permission to go on their little “field trip” as Calder had put it. She was a good student, and he had already let others go, so there was no doubt in her mind that he would let them go. Kahlan walked back to her seat and gathered her stuff. “He says its okay, so lead the way.” She stopped and laughed at herself, having had no intention to rhyme.

Surprisingly, Calder found himself beginning to get interested in the assignment, but he tried not to make a show of it. Seymour was like a non-fictional Mad-Eye Moody, able to see out of the back of his head. The young man wasn't about to give the professor the satisfaction of assigning a semi-interesting project, especially after Cale just complained and bad-mouthed the class to Seymour just the previous day. It wasn't really the class specifically, just the topic in general. However, he didn't bother trying to hide his distaste for Seymour either. "Oh. Well, that's just as interesting I guess." Cale joked, after Kahlan debunked his theory of her father's mob connection. When she then agreed to his idea of taking a walk to the drama department, Cale began gathering up his things. "Yeah, and I think it would probably be the most interesting, perhaps even the easiest the gather some costumes." With the assumption that Seymour would allow them to leave, Cale finished packing his stuff and stood up while Kahlan went to ask. He figured she would have better luck than him, even if it would be unfair for others to leave and not them. "See, he likes you. I bet if I would have asked he'd have said no." Again, a teasing grin crossed his lips as they headed for the door. The halls were quiet as everyone was either in class or in the student commons waiting for their next class to begin. While they made their way across campus to the theater, Cale tried to start up some conversation. "Architect. That's a pretty difficult job. I remember in middle school we made blue prints of our dream house to scale, furnished it and everything. All of those symbols were a pain to remember, not to mention the math involved when trying to create a scale." He remember his plans didn't turn out proportionate and he had no room to fit a tub in his bathroom.

Kahlan was kind of looking forward to this project. Then again, she always loved things like this. Usually she became frustrated with group members because they didn’t pull their weight, but partners were usually easier to work with, and Cale seemed like he would be a good one, despite her first impression of him. She asked permission for them to leave the class, and upon gathering her stuff exited the room with Calder. Most professors knew her well. They knew that she was a good student, and when Kay asked to go to the library to work, that’s exactly what she did. "See, he likes you. I bet if I would have asked he'd have said no." Kahlan laughed. “Oh, I doubt that. He still would have let us go because of me.” She grinned, teasing. She wasn’t nearly as full of herself as she sometimes talked. Her brother Will on the other hand… They exited the building and started across campus to the theater. "Architect. That's a pretty difficult job. I remember in middle school we made blue prints of our dream house to scale, furnished it and everything. All of those symbols were a pain to remember, not to mention the math involved when trying to create a scale." Kay smiled. “Yeah. Dad’s pretty good at what he does, though. I think he always kind of hoped I’d take after him, but no such luck. Owen and Jake, my older brothers, did though. So I guess he can’t be too upset over that.” With a big family like theirs, they were bound to have some that took off in their parents footsteps. Vic had gone into law enforcement, which was okay with their family. Ethan and Shane were going to be lawyers. It was Kahlan and Will that didn’t exactly follow the mold. But that was just how they were. “What about your parents? What do they do?” she asked, attempting to keep the conversation going.

For years Calder was never a fan of group or partner projects, unless they were able to choose their own partners. Back in high school, he knew who the slackers were and who would work with him to get their assignment finished, rather than butt heads with him. He had no problem with creative differences in the theatre, unless they were so severe the integrity of the production was thrown in jeopardy. Cale listened to Kahlan talk about her family, reminding him of his own which brought a sour taste to his mouth. He was suddenly reminded of their dinner party in a few months that he was obligated to attend. He'd certainly be coming out of it with a trendy new girlfriend. Puh, that was going to last about a week. He was already starting to work up all sorts of break up excuses. He was riding on unable to carry out a long distance relationship. He was trying not to take into account the idea of her doing something crazy like transfer schools or, god forbid, willing to "make it work." "I can understand that, my father is the same way. I'm pretty sure he still thinks I'm going to give up on acting. It's his fault for taking me to all of those Broadway shows growing up, but he keeps his mouth shut...for the most part." Except when he had a bad day at work. Overall, he didn't hear it too much from his father since he's been away at school. His mother always encourage him to pursue his acting career; however, she was also the one who instigated all of his "relationships." "Oh, well. My dad is the CEO of some company that deals with international trade or...something. To be honest, I don't have much of a clue except he travels a lot and knows like five languages. I'm not sure my mom really knows because when I asked that's was the answer she gave me." Cale shrugged with a laugh. "Now my mom's is pretty simple to understand. She's a forensic pathologist. It can be a little nerve-wracking though when we have law enforcement officials showing up at our house all the time." He used to find it totally awesome when he was little, but as he became a teenager it could be a little scary. "It's amazing with their demanding jobs they even find time to get in my hair, but they manage to fit it into their tight schedules." He wished they wouldn't, but when he was growing up he appreciated the time they took for him. He had a relatively normal child hood, void of nannies and frequent baby sitters. Turning off the path they were walking toward the theatre, he shifted to the side of the narrowed sidewalk for a group of students to get by. "So you have older brothers. I'm an only child myself, but I don't think siblings would suit me. I'm too used to being spoiled rotten." He chuckled, reaching out to open the door to the building and holding it for Kahlan to enter first.

ALL I KNOW IS I WAS ENCHANTED TO MEET YOU Kahlan found it interesting to hear about someone else’s crazy family. Her’s had always been borderline crazy, though considering how many people had lived under her roof that was no surprise. Things had always been loud and crazy around her house, but she honestly wouldn’t have had it any other way. Kahlan loved the craziness and insanity. It kept things interesting. "I can understand that, my father is the same way. I'm pretty sure he still thinks I'm going to give up on acting. It's his fault for taking me to all of those Broadway shows growing up, but he keeps his mouth shut...for the most part." She smiled, glad that at least someone could relate to her. A lot of parents had expectations for their kids, but most that she came across honestly didn’t care. They just let them go and follow their dreams, whether they had foundation or not. Not that her mom and dad weren’t supportive. They were, and they believed that she could do anything she set her mind to, they just believed she was destined for greater things. "Oh, well. My dad is the CEO of some company that deals with international trade or...something. To be honest, I don't have much of a clue except he travels a lot and knows like five languages. I'm not sure my mom really knows because when I asked that's was the answer she gave me." She laughed softly. "Now my mom's is pretty simple to understand. She's a forensic pathologist. It can be a little nerve-wracking though when we have law enforcement officials showing up at our house all the time." That was pretty interesting, she had to say. “Why? You afraid they were coming for you?” She was teasing, of course. Still, Kahlan knew how boys were. Her older brothers had been arrested for several things before. Her older brother Vic had been a bit of a hellion before he had become sheriff. And he was a pretty great guy. He had just followed after Owen and Jake who had a bit of a mischievous streak. "It's amazing with their demanding jobs they even find time to get in my hair, but they manage to fit it into their tight schedules." She could understand that. Her parents had crazy, time consuming jobs, and yet they always somehow managed to get involved in their kid’s lives. Not that was a bad thing, just annoying at times. "So you have older brothers. I'm an only child myself, but I don't think siblings would suit me. I'm too used to being spoiled rotten." She laughed, stepping through the door he held open for her, then waited for him to lead the way as she had no idea where she was going in this place. “Yeah, I have 6 older brothers, though one’s my twin, but he was born first, so I guess that technically makes him older.” She paused, waiting for the expression to cross Calder’s face that came every time she mentioned how many siblings she had. “Mom really wanted a girl,” she explained. “Though I have never been an only child, I can say that I was spoiled well enough as the only girl. Daddy’s little girl gets everything she wants.” She grinned, though it was the honest truth. If she ever wanted anything, all she had to do was ask, and her father would somehow make it happen. He was pretty great that way. “So we almost there?” she asked, glancing around the halls, feeling completely lost here. tagged for: calder joseph hennessey // word count: 591 // notes: you finally get a reply! sorry it took so long.

Cale knew he made friends easily because he could talk to nearly everyone, but he was feeling a friendship blossom with Kahlan after only a few minutes of being with her. He was glad that Seymour had partnered them up. Even with the dislike he had for the professor, Cale had to admit he knew how to play matchmaker - for educational purposes of course. Cale had no intentions of moving in on Kahlan, at least not at the present time, until he learned a little more about her. For all he knew she could have some sort of weird fetish or obsession - like frogs. Believe it or not one of the girls his parents set him up with was obsessed with the green creatures, it freaked him the hell out and thus started his frog phobia. "Actually yes. Believe it or not my friends and I used to play a few pranks around the neighborhood." He always tried to play it cool when they came to the door, but it was difficult, especially when there was an open prank lingering around somewhere. Normally, the police weren't local cops, but state troopers and detectives. Cale even remembered a time when FBI showed up, but that was when he was about ten. "Six?" Calder didn't bother to hide his surprise at that bit of information. Six older brothers. He couldn't imagine having one. He also learned, in that same response, that she was a twin. Thankfully fraternal, so he wouldn't have to worry about getting the wrong sibling. What a nightmare that could turn into. "Very persistent, your mother." He joked. He couldn't imagine how many siblings he would have if his parents were dead set on having a girl. After they entered the theatre building, Calder led them down the main hall then turned off at a four-way. "Yeah, it's just down here." At the end of the hall, Cale opened the door to the auditorium. It was vacant and dark, not even stage crew was around putting last minute touches to the Les Mis set, testing lights or music cues. Everything was pretty much ready to go at this point. "Hold on, let me find the light switches." He ran his hand along the wall next to the doors, trying to locate the plague of switches to control the track lights. His eyes were still trying to adjust to the near pitch dark and as he moved to the other side of the door frame, treaded on what he assumed to be Kahlan's toes. Almost losing his balance and afraid he caused Kahlan to lose her, he grabbed her to steady them both. "Sorry. You'd think I'd know this by now." He chuckled, letting Kahlan go once he felt she was okay and continued his search for the lights. Finally he found them and flicked on the outer stage lights mainly used for rehearsal, before all the other spotlights and what not were figured out. "The prop room is behind the stage." Still rather embarrassed for his clumsy moment, Cale kept his mind on the task at hand and headed between the seats toward the stage.

ALL I KNOW IS I WAS ENCHANTED TO MEET YOU Kahlan had never been involved in anything relatively artistic. She was a writer, but English was an academic subject and so it didn’t really count. She had never been a band geek or in theater or choir or anything of the sort. She had a good singing voice, but she would be too nervous or embarrassed to go up in front of people and do so. She would definitely be one to have stage fright, despite how outgoing she was in life. That kind of thing just seemed completely different. She certainly didn’t know her way around a theater, that was for sure. "Yeah, it's just down here." Cale opened a door, but everything beyond that was dark and Kay couldn’t see a thing. "Hold on, let me find the light switches." Kahlan nodded and waited in the doorway for him to do so. She could barely see, but she felt it when Cale found her in the dark and just about fell with him. He grabbed her, but considering he seemed about ready to fall that didn’t seem like the brightest idea and she grabbed onto the door in an attempt to stay upright. "Sorry. You'd think I'd know this by now." He released her and she let go of the door, steady on her feet. “It’s alright,” she offered. Everyone had their clumsy moments. He finally found the lights and Kahlan could finally see again. "The prop room is behind the stage." She nodded and followed him through the theater towards the prop room, once again allowing him to lead the way as she was completely clueless as to where she was going. “So how long have you been doing all this,” she asked, indicating the whole acting/theater thing, curious. Kahlan had never been involved in anything like that, mostly because she had been a mess in her high school years. She was glad that she was no longer in that place, and she didn’t want to go back there any time soon. tagged for: calder joseph hennessey // word count: 335 // notes: <33

Cale felt so much more at home in the theatre than any other part of the campus, even his apartment off campus. It was the one thing he could count on, no matter how inconsistent and unpredictable it tended to be. He knew what he was doing on the stage and behind it, but outside this room, not a clue. It didn't matter what city or country he was in, if he was in a theatre he was at home. It was awkward for him to voice those feelings, even to his closest friends. He felt it made him weak or gave him homosexual qualities. Musical theatre wasn't necessarily a very manly activity, even though many of the greatest actors have starred on stage in live performances. It was gaining more and more acceptance. By the time he was ready for the big stage, Calder had an inkling he would fit much better in the art. One thing was for certain, he wasn't about to give it up; at least not any time soon. He didn't have a huge ego, but he felt he would make it; he was good enough and could only get better.
Hopping onto the stage, Cale turned around, offering his hand to Kahlan to help her up as well. He was so used to not using the stairs at either end, that it didn't even occur to him to do so now. "What, theatre?" After helping Kahlan, Cale once again led her behind the drawn curtain and to stage right toward a door against the far wall. Stage left was the theatre's green room, where the actor's waited before it was their turn on stage. It wasn't really green, though he knew some that were, it was just called that. The origin is unknown, but there are several theories. "About twelve years. Let's see, I'm twenty..." He did some quick math in his head. "Yeah about twelve." He was going to go on with the details of his acting classes, summer camps, yada yada, but didn't want to bore her with the details. "So, have you done any sort of theatre?" Luckily, the prop room was unlocked. Cale wasn't really in the mood to go hunting for the key, even though he knew where it was. He just didn't feel like walking to the theatre director's office at the moment.
This time the light was easy to find, being a single switch right inside the door. Cale flicked it and the oversize closet was illuminated. It was a huge mess with racks of costumes, boxes of props, shelves of hats, masks, and other costume accessories. Old backdrops lined the walls and even more loose props were strewn on the floor. There wasn't any direct walking path so they had to make their own, kicking aside swords and bits of scenery. An indian headdress caught his eye on the shelves lining the opposite wall. "Hey, look what I found." He pulled it down to get a better look, showing it to Kahlan as well. "Let's just pick around and anything we think we could use set aside then we can go through it and see what we can put together." The more pieces they had, the better it would be to choose a defined topic instead of looking for one specific character.

ALL I KNOW IS I WAS ENCHANTED TO MEET YOU Calder led them to the stage where he hoped up immediately, then extended his hand to her. Kahlan had made the mistake of dressing for the warm weather, which meant dress and high heels. In her defense, though, she hadn’t known they would be doing this sort of thing. It was interesting for sure, but Cale was a lot stronger than he looked and she was able to get onto the stage with minimal embarrassment. "What, theatre?" Kahlan nodded. “About twelve years. Let's see, I'm twenty... Yeah about twelve." That was pretty cool, she thought. Usually those that were really good at something or really involved in it had been doing it for years. Things like that were usually started when you were kids. "So, have you done any sort of theatre?" The question surprised her, though it probably shouldn’t have. She should have expected it. “Me? No. Unless you count the odd Church Christmas play.” Which had ended when she was about thirteen. High school hadn’t been good for her. “I think I’ve played every animal in the stable.” She grinned. Yeah, her experiences with such things were extensive. She had never really thought about such things, though, mostly because she had had other things on her mind. Her parents had always pushed her to concentrate on school, and with all of her brothers actively involved in sports Kahlan hadn’t really gotten involved in anything herself. She had done martial arts with her brothers a little when she was young, but when Will had quit to do football so had Kahlan. That didn’t mean she couldn’t defend herself, though. Her brothers had made sure she could handle herself no matter what the situation. She followed Cale across the stage to the prop room, her heels clicking loudly in the empty theater. The prop room was a mess if Kahlan had ever seen one, and she had to pick her way through it to get anywhere. "Hey, look what I found." She looked up to see the headdress and laughed. “If anyone dresses like an Indian, I vote you.” She grinned. Even though Kahlan was the one with Native American blood. The thought was entertaining to her, though. "Let's just pick around and anything we think we could use set aside then we can go through it and see what we can put together." Kahlan nodded. It sounded like a good idea to her. There was a lot of stuff here, though. She found a cowboy hat and stuck it on top of her own head so as to keep it away from the mess as something to possibly use. She showed a couple thing to Calder that she discovered before throwing them into their pile to keep. In her search she came across a bow and then plastic arrows that likely went with the Indian headdress. She was going to say something, but then had a better idea and grinned. She aimed and shot an arrow at Calder, hitting him in the shoulder with it. She grinned when he looked up at her. “Whoops,” she said, though she had purposely intended to hit him. tagged for: calder joseph hennessey // word count: 525 // notes: <33

Cale chuckled when Kahlan replied that her only theatre experience was the Christmas play at church. He remembered doing that as a child; always begging to be one of the wise men. Then one year, the final year he did the play, he was Joseph. It was the highlight of the year. "I'd count that. People tend to notice if you screw up one of the best known stories in history. Not to mention you'd have to be very versatile to take on a different animal every year." He created enough resumes to know how to work the crowd. Taking something as simple as acting in the nativity story and turning it into a serious feat. Then again, some directors like to know you've done something as small and simple as that because it shows nothing is beneath you. He once played a tree in an elementary school play that he mentioned in an audition, getting him a bit more recognition since he was able to maintain his dignity. Then again, he was probably about seven at the time so dignity hadn't quite developed.
In the prop room, Cale went through more of the shelves after finding the Indian headdress. "Or we could rewrite history with the first woman Indian chief." He laughed, pushing aside an aluminum tudor helmet. Wrong era and country. This would be a lot easier if there was some sort of catalog of everything in the room. Cale knew that would be pointless though since they got props from everywhere, mostly donations. Students would bring things in from home to use and leave them, having no use for them otherwise. There was just too much stuff to keep track of with more coming in every year. He was working away from the shelves within reach and soon grabbed a stool to reach the top two shelves. After placing the stool he started to step onto it when he felt something poke him in the shoulder. He looked over to see Kahlan lowering a bow. "Nice shot Katniss, maybe you'd be the better Indian after all." He laughed, stepping up on the stool. Right away his eyes landed on a cap gun partially hidden under a green boa. He reached for the gun, opening the hammer to see if there were any caps left. There were. A sly grin spread across his lips and he looked toward Kahlan. "I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?" He fired the cap gun and a loud crack radiated through the prop room with a puff of smoke. Cale brought the gun to his lips and blew across the opening of the barrel then spun it on his index finger and pretended to holster it. He chuckled, looking at the toy gun and then sticking it in the back pocket of his jeans for safe keeping. He remembered how popular those things were when he was younger, now people have moved on to the real thing.
