There was no doubting the fact that Kaler Scott had had some hard times in his life. As a child, he had been abandoned and left to survive on his own for three weeks in a run down, dirty apartment at the age of four. He had spent two years bouncing from foster and state homes. Those challenged had left their mark, but his adoptive mother’s death when he was twenty-two had been even more difficult to manage and the biggest thing he had ever been asked to overcome right up until this year when it felt like he had lost his entire world. People were well aware that Kaler had had a rough time of it, what with losing his girlfriend and their unborn child, and even though he had been to hell and back in his efforts to try and recover, he still didn’t know if he had ever been as lost and hurt as his friend Jared Trent was. Okay, he had probably been far more hurt and lost, but the look on his best friend’s face could almost suggest otherwise. Kaler and Jared had hit a small, local park that day with the rest of the Trent clan, and the Orsino’s as well to toss a football around and to have a little fun. It really had been interesting; all of these boys had played the game in high school and Kaler had gone on to play it at Yale. They were serious about the sport even when it was played like this, and anyone that had been around to observe would have definitely been entertained. But, now it was just Kaler and Jared, the others having all left to go home or to do this or that. Kaler had thought he would be heading to his home as well, but Jared had acted like he hadn’t wanted to leave, and Kaler couldn’t just turn his back on his friend. There was no use to talk about the situation, but throwing the football back and forth always seemed like a good source of therapy. They were able to chat and ramble and laugh mindlessly, not talking about anything in particular but it was more than enough, and it was the kind of light and easy that both young men could benefit from. It was just unfortunate that they couldn’t ignore reality forever; Jared had to get home to go help with his son. Kaler was left there with his football in hand, watching his friend wonder off through the park. He didn’t envy what Jared was dealing with at all, but Kaler knew that Randi would come around and that things would eventually be okay. He just hoped it was before it all found a way to break Jared, who was up until this point still completely whole. None of the world’s evils and troubles had ever touched that young man, and it was what made him as odd and special as he was. Kaler just hoped it could stay that way. He sighed before turning around to head down the dirt path that would end at the parking lot where his truck would be waiting. His mind had automatically switched to what, or rather who, would be waiting on him at home. Kaler’s life was falling back into line, his thoughts full of a pretty little blonde that had stitched him together by hand. Britt Hale meant the world to him and more, but the very moment that Kaler’s icy blue eyes caught sight of an all too familiar brunette, his heart stopped for a moment. Even though he knew who it was, there was always that little part of his mind that recalled Vidette Garland when he caught a glimpse of her look-a-like. It was amazing how his heart still ached for her, but Kaler had learned to set that aside in order to maintain something of a friendship with Evelyn Garland. “Evie! Hey, wait up,” he called as he jogged a little down the path to where the woman was. “I never pegged you for an outdoorsy kind of girl. What are you doing out here?”

i just wanna run it had been a long ass time since evelyn garland had taken her ass out of the houseboat and got back into her regular running schedule. it was nothing spectacular, but after being run down by micah orsino that fateful night she vowed that she was going to get out there and run until she could keep pace and out of his grasp. she did not like being fireman carried, and whenever she had been having one of those nights she really didn’t want to be dealing with him. but that had felt like an eternity ago, and things with her and mike were good. she didn’t care to define where they were or what they meant to each other, because well it scared her. she knew that something had changed that night when he took her in again but she couldn’t help but realize that. things were better than evie could remember them for a long time, and she really felt like she could breathe without suffocating. it had taken a long ass time to get there but the brunette was finally there and going strong. she was enjoying the fresh air after riding over to the park with micah, but by the time that she was done running and clearing her head of everything that had been clustering and festering there, mostly her thoughts about a certain james hale, she was left there! micah had left her at the damn park! the worst part about this scenario was that her cell phone was in the passenger seat of is truck. evie groaned not wanting to run the entire way back to the houseboat whenever she saw two familiar figures still throwing around the football and being their adorable little selves. evie paid close attention as she watched kaler and jared, without making any distinction that she was there. she knew that jared had some serious shit going on at home, seeing as how micah told her but she hated that she wasn’t there for him. it was jared, someone that held a very special place in her heart, but that was because of everything from back in high school. she needed to not think about jared and randi, because it just made her sad. she took another lap around the park and whenever she was finding her way to kaler’s truck she heard the all to familiar voice of his. one that still stung a little, but they were building a friendship that would always be a little work in progress. she stopped where she was when she heard him call out to her and placed her hands on her hips as she waited for him to catch her. “c’mon kaler, move it.” she said obviously teasing him, but it was good to have someone around that she could talk to. hell her head was a jumbled mess, and she was certain that kaler knew all the details about everything. she rolled her eyes in disbelief, but it was true she wasn’t super outdoorsy. “well you see, i rode over here with mike whenever you idiots were playing football so i could run and clear my head. the idiot left me here with no cell phone and no money. can you believe that?” she laughed lightly and just let her dark eyes find his icy blue ones. “so what’s up? we haven’t chatted in a while. how’s jared holding up?” she figured it was better to hear it from his best friend than to try and step where she wasn’t wanted, but her heart broke for jared and all she wanted was to see him and his wife figure shit out. although there was another relationship that evie didn’t want to hear and she clearly stayed away from the topic of kaler and britt. it was just a little much with the dramatics that were evie and jem.. tagged for: kaler ryan scott // word count: 662 // notes: kevie <33 // credit: to luna love bug <3

Just when Kaler thought that he could truly have a handle on things, he was shown just how far he had yet to go before he could say that. He knew that he had definitely lifted himself from rock bottom, but the ache that hit his heart the moment that his blue eyes caught sight of that familiar figure could almost send him back into that downward spiral. It wasn’t Evie’s fault, of course, but there had been a time when Kaler could throw all his anger back on her. Now, he knew better and he was able to take those steps toward the young woman that was a new friend, but at the same time could damn well break his heart. He missed Vidette like crazy, but she wasn’t here anymore and he was learning to accept that. That, by some small measure, made this easier. He just hoped that Evie didn’t take his comment about her not being the outdoorsy kind of girl the wrong way; he had just never seen her out in the daylight much, and certainly never out on a run. Truth be told, he didn’t think he’d ever pictured her as the athletic type at all, but then again Kaler didn’t know Evie as well as it sometimes seemed he did. They were bonded by a mutual loss, and had an understanding, but he supposed that there were always going to be things for him to learn about this Garland sister. The brunette explained her plight, and it really didn’t surprise Kaler at all. Micah Orsino was a great guy, but he could definitely be a little scatterbrained at times when he had his own agenda at mind. He just grinned, only able to imagine the price the poor man would pay when Evelyn got her hands on him again. It was true that Kaler and Evie hadn’t talked lately, and that wasn’t really intentional. Kaler didn’t even try to comment on that part of it, though. ”Jared’s doing well enough for what’s going on, I guess. They’ll figure it all out eventually.” Kaler didn’t like talking about other peoples’ lives, even with someone like Evie who was friends with Jared. It felt too much like gossip, and he really didn’t know much more than what he had told her. Jared didn’t talk about it a lot, and Kaler didn’t ask. He would be there to listen when Jared needed to rant and vent, like any good guy friend would be but Kaler never pried. Well, rarely pried. He smiled over at Evie. “But what’s up with you, huh? You and Micah seem to be attached at the hip these days, even if he did kind of leave you here.” And, maybe it wasn’t any of Kaler’s business, but he was the kind of guy that could pick up on the most subtle of changes. What was going on between Micah and Evie seemed like freaking bombs being dropped left and right in Kaler’s eyes, so he didn’t really need the confirmation but these were two of his friends. He at least owed it to them to ask rather than just assume.

i just wanna run evelyn knew that a lot of people didn’t know a lot about her. truth be told that was how she liked it; the less people knew the better. especially after everything that had been going on in her life lately. the fewer people that tried to figure her out were better, but this was kaler. there was always going to be things he thought he knew that she could prove him wrong. besides, how in the hell did these men think she managed to keep her body in tip top condition if she was not running or doing yoga? it was just how she was and she didn’t really care if they knew about this side of her. evie had been a cheerleader way back in the day and little things like that kept up with her. she liked to run and that was why she was here. when kaler finally caught up to her it did not take long to explain why she was still there, and since he knew her all to well she could only imagine the ideas that were running through his head. micah orsino was definitely going to have some serious making up to do that night, otherwise he was not going to like living with the little brunette, but it wasn’t micah that kaler was talking about. she nodded her head understanding that this was a hard situation for jared, and she really didn’t gossip she was just concerned. jared and evie hadn’t really talked much since her sisters died, so all of her information was second hand. “well it’s understandable. the virgin mary adores him, so they will figure it out. they have too.” hell if jared and randi couldn’t figure out how to deal with something like this what in the hell made evie think that she would ever be able to figure anything out? she had no hope if those two could not work things out. that smile on his face though was what had evie rolling her eyes. she should have known that kaler would be the one to ask her what was going on with her and micah. to be honest, evie didn’t know. it wasn’t like they had the talk to figure anything out, but they were something. she nudged him with her elbow and chuckled lightly. “yeah, so what’s your point? it’s just micah, but you know me. shit hits the fan a lot, especially with jem.” her relationship with the eldest hale was always on a rollercoaster ride, and this was one of the many downs that she wasn’t sure that they were going to be able to pull themselves out of. but it was micah, and part of her heart tugged for him. “but i moved back into the houseboat, what are you trying to get at kaler? are you asking if mike and i are together or something?” she raised an eyebrow, kind of amused that kaler was trying to figure this out when she clearly had no idea and no definition for him. tagged for: kaler ryan scott // word count: 524 // notes: kevie <33 // credit: to luna love bug <3
