Another day and another bunch of classes to attend at the college. Lindsey would probably be considered weird to some of the other students because she loved having her classes back to back. It was just easier for her that way. What was the point in having gap time between classes? Just do all the homework, projects, and studying the night before to get through all the classes the next day. That way it gave more time to do whatever, to her at least. Plus it meant she didn’t have to stay on campus longer than needed. The traveling back and forth between home and wherever one lived seemed pointless, especially with the way gas prices were going. But it took up time as well. Now she was finally at her last class of the day, business management. It was a fairly easy one, to her at least, but compared to her other classes that were more general courses, it was fun. The subject was something she knew and could handle.
She remembered the days when her father would take her into the office and show her how things were done, even if it wasn’t take your child to work day. The fun part was that she remembered when she was a little girl her father would tell her orders to give to the other employees and they would salute her before going off to do as they were told. It was amusing just to see those grown men and women in her head saluting to a little blonde girl before going off to complete the job they were assigned. Walking into the classroom, which was set up like a lecture hall with stadium seating, tables, and chairs, she noticed that some people were absent from class. They were either ditching or hung over, though it was early afternoon. Walking up the steps a bit she made her way to her usual seat in the middle of the class but still close to the front. The professor walked in, smiling as usual, and he seemed to take notice of the lack of bodies present. ”Since some of our other wannabe future businessmen are absent it looks like I’ll give you your projects today. These are to be completed with the partner I assign you. Raise your hand when I call your name and get started. I want your business plans by Monday.” he started.
Lindsey wasn’t terrible excited for a project with a partner, just because she had had plenty of bad experiences with a partner, but this gave her the chance to meet someone in the class so she couldn’t complain. The professor began reading off the list of assigned partners and she listened for her name. ”Lindsey Stratton and Calder Hennessey.” While raising her hand she looked around the room and spotted the boy who was Calder. He looked familiar, but she doubted she had ever had the chance to talk to him. Grabbing her stuff she decided it would be easier if they at least sat by each other, and she moved to sit next to him. ”Hi there.” she grinned as she sat down, ”I’m Lindsey.” By instinct she offered her hand to Calder to shake. It was just in her nature. ”So are you ready to get this business plan done?” she questioned, ”What were you thinking of doing it on? I mean, we can do any type of business like a restaurant, hotel, or whatever. I’m fine with anything.”

Pulling his slacks on, Cale checked his watch before zipping up. He had five minutes to get to his business management class and a ten minute trip to the campus from his apartment. Rehearsal had run late the night before with opening night coming up in just a couple days and Cale had forgotten to set his alarm before plopping on the bed. He lay there in the quiet darkness for a few minutes, thinking about setting his alarm, but soon those few minutes turned into hours and the next thing he knew the sunlight was waking him. And if the sunlight was hitting his face, it was around noon-time. He was still in that waking stage so getting around just wasn't practical. He tripped over things and was unable to gauge his distance from doorways and furniture, running into more than his share of objects. By the time he was headed out the door, his mind had cleared enough so his thoughts were coherent. He made it to campus two minutes shy of his usual time, though it didn't help him much since his class had already begun. He was a mess running from his car trying to shove books into his bag, which he had thrown in the backseat only to have it spill out after a particularly hard turn.
"Late again, Hennessey?!" One of his theatre buddies called from a bench on the path Cale was traveling. Cale didn't even take the time to answer, just waved his hand in the general direction of the voice to show he heard. He used the word "again" like tardiness was a typical occurrence for Cale. It wasn't, although he's been having bad luck with it lately. Actually, Calder is always annoyingly on time. His parents were to blame for that. Still, it couldn't always be helped. Cale ran the steps two at a time to the entrance of the business wing. Thankfully his classroom was on the first floor and right near the entrance. He opened the door as quietly as he possibly could. It was near the back of the room so only the professor would notice him. Even though he was used to being the center of attention on the stage, he wasn't too keen on being stared at coming late to class. He walked in just as his name was called for whatever reason, making him freeze and stare at the professor. Then he saw a girl near the front with her hand on the air so he raised his own, thinking it was a safe bet. As soon as the professor moved on, naming two more people, Cale figured out that he was pairing them off, but the reason was still a mystery. He walked casually to his usual seat and slid into it just as the girl, his assumed partner, met him there. "Hey. Cale." He replied, taking her hand. He started pulling a notebook and pen from his bag when Lindsey began talking about their assignment, which he finally learned was a business plan, or at least that was the first stage of an all-out project, which he vaguely remembered mentioned in the syllabus. "Uh, to be honest I haven't thought too much into the idea, but I'm as flexible as you seem to be." Which might lead to an "i don't care, you decide" battle, which would in turn get them no where. However, since business was not his forte, only his minor, he was more than willing to run with her ideas.

Lindsey was glad when Calder, or rather Cale as he introduced himself, took her hand and shook it. Some people gave her a look of confusion, unsure of what she expected them to do with her hand. Maybe it was just a simple thing that most people didn’t know about anymore. Everyone was all for giving hugs upon first meeting but that just seemed a little inappropriate, especially when trying to imagine a bunch of corporate giants in suits hugging each other, as if they were best friends when really they wanted to tear each other’s throats out. Business wise anyways. Or there was a kiss on the hand, but that was just a little too weird. Lindsey had only ever seen that in movies where the princess offers her hand to the prince and he kisses it. That had never happened to her before and she was glad for it. Now that would be embarrassing. ”It’s nice to meet you Cale.” she smiled, ”I appreciate the honesty though. I was thinking of a hotel for the business and we could build from there. Does that sound all right with you?” All ready in her head she had planned on doing a hotel and building it from the ground up. Well, they were supposed to start with the business all ready made/built, and then talk about how they would expand the business, make it grow, and make sure it ran.
That’s when the professor spoke up once more, ”Now that the groups are ready you’re free to work on it while I head to my office and finish grading. You can stay here or go elsewhere if you’re afraid someone may steal your plan. If there’s any questions feel free to drop by my office.” A few of the groups had all ready grabbed their backpacks and left the classroom. It was fairly obvious they weren’t planning on working on the project, but rather to go have some fun or do something else. They did have some time to kill anyways. ”Do you want to head outside and work on this?” Lindsey asked Cale, ”It is a nice day, but if you want to stay here that’s fine.” Flipping through some of the pages in her notebook she found the page that she had scribbled some of her hotel ideas down on. Sliding it in front of Cale she said, ”These were some of my ideas. Let me know what you think.” The page said fairly simple and easy ideas, including advertising ideas to stay at Lion’s Head which was a name she thought could work for any business, marketing ideas that would prove that Lion’s Head had the best of everything which in this case would be rooms, beds, service, and so on, and then just little fun things of merchandise like shirts, mugs, wristbands, and other things that would get the name out.

Cale looked around for the attendance sheet that had been passed around at the beginning of class before he walked in, tardy, finding it near the front, almost at the end of its circulation. He'd definitely have to make a casual trip to the front of the class before it ended to sign in. He may have missed a few minutes, but he was going to be present for the majority of class. He knew he was allowed to miss at least two without any penalty, but he would prefer to use those in emergencies, and real absences. Until then, he was going to get to work on this project with his partner, even though he wasn't all that thrilled about being assigned another project on top of the one he already had for American History. Cale listened to Lindsey's idea for a hotel as their business, nodding. "That sounds like a plan. I think-" He was cut off when the professor spoke up once more to give them the rest of the class to work on their assignment. Figures. He comes in late in five minutes later class is dismissed. Well, at least he didn't miss the start of the project. He really didn't like letting people down, especially partners for classes. If he had missed the class, Lindsey would be left to start on her own. At least now they could establish some foundation.
The scramble of bags and people almost made him laugh as everyone, save for them and a few others, made a mad dash for the exit. You would have thought someone yelled "Fire!" Some thing never changed no matter how old you got. "Let's head outside. We can see if the gazebo outside the library is free." He replied to her question of moving locations. He really was tired of being cooped up in classrooms, especially with the warm weather settling in for the season. Pulling Lindsey's notebook in front of him, Cale looked down at the scribbles she had written. "Wow, you're prepared. How long have you been working on this project?" Either she was an overachiever or quick-thinker, or both. He didn't have anything against it, in fact he found that convenient and cut down on their brainstorming time, leaving more to actually put this thing together. He shoved his botebook back into his bag and swung it onto his shoulder. Standing, he brought grabbed Lindsey's notebook to read over while they walked. "Lion's Head. I like the name. It's way better than half the places I ever stayed at." Before they headed for the door, Cale ran down to the front to sign in quick before the professor packed up the sheet then met Lindsey at the door. "So, do we have a budget? Or do we make that up ourselves as needed?" Maybe they didn't even need one, he had no idea. His father might be a CEO but Cale knew next to nothing about business. He took the classes, managed to pass them but none of what he learned was retained and available for use in his other classes.

Lindsey was glad that Cale was fine with the plan, though he was interrupted by the professor saying that some could leave. ”Did you want to finish that thought?” she questioned, not wanting him to feel like she didn’t care about what he had to say. Even though this was only a class project and not a real life situation listening and communicating were very important skills. If she wasn’t able to work well with another person there was no way that she would be able to make her way up the corporate ladder in business and that would ruin her dream of becoming a CEO. ”That sounds perfect.” she beamed, glad that Cale was fine with heading outside. He even had a great idea, the gazebo sounded much better than just chilling out on the grassy field. That was probably going to be covered with other students who were waiting for their next class to start and were probably working on the assignment that was due. Lindsey shrugged a bit as Cale commented that she was prepared. ”To be honest I didn’t prepare that much. I think I saw the assignment a few days ago and during my other classes when I got an idea I just jotted it down. So it wasn’t a lot of preparation time, more of boredom time that got me this far.” Lindsey admitted. That was the truth. If she wanted to be extremely prepared she would have all ready finished the project on her own, but she didn’t care that much about the class. Besides she would have felt like an idiot if she would have done that, seeing as now it was a group project. So much for the group in that scenario.
Picking up her own backpack Lindsey followed after Cale towards the door as he still looked over the ideas she had written down. ”I’m glad. I figured it was name that was versatile, you know for a restaurant, hotel, or even a shop. So if you’re fine with it we could call the hotel that. One less thing to worry about.” she said. As Cale ran over to write on the attendance sheet she waited at the door for him to come back before continuing on again. ”I’m pretty sure we don’t have a budget, but we probably shouldn’t spend over a million. It’s supposed to be like a starter business, so a company that isn’t huge and massive that has a bunch of money to blow. At least that’s what I think.” Lindsey replied. That was true. All ready she could imagine the professor marking down a groups project just for the amount of money they decided to waste. Any company wouldn’t be too happy with having someone who just spent their money like crazy. Money was money, it didn’t grow on trees. ”So, if you don’t mind me asking Cale, what’s your major?” she asked, ”I feel like I’ve seen you before, but never had a chance to talk with you, at least on a personal level.”

Calder never understood his father's fascination with big business, or why he agreed to minor in the subject at all. There was too much involved, too much the common person didn't understand. Not to mention, business was just an extension of the government. There was too much politics involved. Cale enjoyed a simpler life without having to worry about the stock market or international relations or whatever else made this country tick. He was fine complaining about the increasing gas prices without knowing the reason behind it. He knew he had exactly five hundred dollars in his bank account and about twenty thousand dollars in loans to pay back once he graduated - which isn't much since his parents pay most of his tuition up front. He had respect for those who chose to pursue a career in this field, which explains why Cale agreed to take a business minor under his performing arts major. Once again he tried to please his parents.
Cale listened to Lindsey's explanation of her preparedness, still fascinated with her ambition. "Well, your ambition saves us some time. I'm liking this advertising campaign so far." Everyone had their areas of specialty, even in the least liked subjects, Cale's was advertising and some merchandising, but advertising was his big thing. He helped advertise for almost every production he was in, forming posters, flyers, creating Facebook pages and Twitter widgets. He even had a few of the cast members at local book stores and coffee shops performing short snippets of larger scenes. He was good with that stuff; it was the fun part. Cale pushed the main doors open and headed back down the steps of the building to the walk way, skimming over Lindsey's notes once more. It was just preliminary ideas, but he had no objections thus far. "No, no. I like it. It gives the whole place a theme, which will come in handy for advertising and decorating. It gives us a foundation." Waiting for Lindsey's answer to his budget question, he passed back her notebook, having pretty much committed the main points to memory. Her answer made him chuckle a little. "Since it needs to be a starter company, we'll probably need investors and unless we get a ton of those, or have a kick ass marketing strategy, I don't have five hundred grand to fork over. I don't know about you, but hypothetically speaking I've got other bills to pay and mouths to feed." Of course this was simply a project, but assuming it was supposed to be as real as possible, he really didn't know anyone who had one million dollars to fork over in a business just starting. He let the business project slip away for just a moment as Lindsey asked about his major. "Is it that obvious I don't find the business world that appealing? I'm a performing arts major. I'm only minoring in business to appease my father. If you went to any of the school's productions in the past two years I was in them. I also did a couple local productions. Um, Little Shop of Horrors was most recent in town, and Les Mis opens this weekend on campus." Calder loved talking about the theatre and could do it all day, but from years of his friends telling him to shut it, he learned to stop.

”Good. I love saving time.” Lindsey beamed, ”No offense or anything. It’s not that I don’t want to work with you or anything. I just hate having to waste time on something that should be simple and easy enough to have worked out.” Hopefully that was a quick enough save. She honestly didn’t want Cale to think that she hated him all ready or anything. He was nice enough and wasn’t objecting so much to her ideas. It didn’t seem as though he was doing that just to get through this, but because he rather liked them. ”That’s true. I can all ready imagine the head of a red lion being the logo or something.” she commented, all ready seeing it in her mind’s eye. As he handed back her notebook she took it, deciding she might as well keep it out so she could scribble down any other ideas that the two of them had. At his comment of other bills to pay and mouths to feed she chuckled. Cale was right though, there were plenty of other things to worry about in real life than forking over the cash for such a large investment. Maybe they could plan on how to get investors? Or perhaps that would be going a bit above and beyond for the assignment. ”I’m with you there. But maybe we can incorporate that into our plan. You know, how we would get investors with our marketing strategy. That is if you want to anyways, we just won’t include how much money we expect from them. Instead claim something like the proceeds will go into stocks for the company.” she suggested.
”Oh no, not at all.” she answered, shaking her head, ”It’s just that if you were a business major I would have felt out of the loop, since I don’t have many business classes with you. I thought it was safer to ask than to just assume.” As she heard Cale explain that he was majoring in the performing arts but was trying to appease his father at the same time she could understand that. A lot of students wanted to major in something different than what they were all ready stuck in, but their parents seemed to have all the control. It was lucky for her that she had always dreamed of being a CEO of a big corporation one day and it helped that she had her dad’s support and knowledge to help her. ”I can’t say I have. I’m still pretty new here, sorry.” Lindsey frowned, ”But I’m sure you were great in them. You’re doing Les Mis? Where can I get tickets! I would love to see that show. Though I must admit, I don’t know the whole back story, but I hear great things about it. Do you have a big part in the show?” Now she was excited, which was obvious for anyone to tell. Even though she wasn’t much of a performer or actor, she loved watching people on stage. Sometimes her father got tickets for a show on Broadway so she was able to go, though he usually let her bring a friend since he didn’t much care for them.

"Oh, it's totally cool. I feel the same way, which is why I appreciate having you as a partner. To be honest, none of this is really my strong point. I mean, my father is this big Trump-like personality and I'm only passing these classes with hours of tutoring." The one thing he did have to make him good in the business world was perserverance. He could just drop the minor altogether and pick up a media one instead, which would go better with his major. However, he heard enough degrading remarks as it was and didn't want to listen to it anymore. Besides, he kept telling himself a background in business would help him if his Broadway dreams never came. He never tried to let that thought linger in the front of his mind, but it was always there in the back somewhere as a reminder of why he was doing this, besides throwing his father a few bones. He'd definitely be filling him in on this assignment, asking for a few ideas. That would get him a few brownie points and something to add rather than just taking all Lindsey's ideas and running with them. However, she seemed to have a pretty good handle on everything so Cale was more than willing to follow her lead and take direction. He was an actor, he could take direction. "Sounds good. It will give it an extra boost." Hopefully enough to save the potential points they could lose. It wasn't that Calder was doubting their abilities to produce a great project (well Lindsey's anyway), but there were always small details that they could overlook, but be noticed by the professor. Maybe with a bit of extra effort, they could save those areas.
Cale didn't believe it wasn't obvious he wasn't a business major, then again, many people didn't believe he was a performing arts major either. Still, it was more believable than business. "Oh, yeah that makes sense. I think I might have had one other class with you last semester. The only business class I had though was Financial Accounting with Riddick." He couldn't really picture her in the room though, maybe it was a gen. ed. class. Well, maybe she would remember. The library loomed in front of them, forcing them to veer off the path or enter. Seeing as the gazebo was outside, they veered, rounding the corner to see the wooden structure vacant and waiting for them. "Well, I don't like to brag about myself, but all the productions had a great cast. We got great reviews." There were only a handful that he did that didn't get too many nice comments, but the low-budget couldn't be helped. "I play Javert, not the main character, but an important role nonetheless. I'm proud of it." Even though he wanted Jean Valjean, he had no problem admitting the other guy was better suited. "All the cast members get four tickets for family and friends, but my parents aren't coming so I've got two to spare. I'll bring them the next time we meet up." Which would probably be sometime before the week was out. Coming upon the gazebo, Cale took a seat on the bench inside, dropping his bag next to him. "Not many people hang here; they prefer the quad, so I figured it would be a safe bet. I rehearse here a lot; not many distractions." Except for the baseball field at the bottom of the hill behind them.

”Thanks.” Lindsey beamed, ”I’m all ready enjoying you as a partner, because for one you actually care to hear my ideas and two you don’t act like I’m an idiot just because I’m a girl.’ That was a downfall in business, as well as sports, being a girl meant people underestimated you. They acted as though you couldn’t do anything because you were a girl. A girl was supposed to be busy at home cooking in the kitchen or taking care of kids. That wasn’t exactly Lindsey’s plan of how she wanted things in her life to go. Marriage wasn’t even something she had thought about. It was career first for her and then whatever happened after that could happen. ”Hours of tutoring huh?” she questioned, ”Who have your tutors been? Because I’m sure it shouldn’t take that long. Sorry, I think business is something that can easily be picked up when explained or taught properly. I could always help you out though, if you wanted.” It was a simple suggestion. Besides it would help her just as well to review material and make sure that she understood it herself. That was what made a good learner, someone who could teach what they knew to another person. ”Good,” she said, writing it down in her notebook, ”That’s added to the list of ideas.”
She had to think for a moment about the class of Financial Accounting. That sounded about right, she had taken that class and with Riddick as well. ”Yep, I think we had that class together to, but we never really talked or worked together.” Lindsey shrugged. Even though they hadn’t worked together before this project would make up for it. She loved making new friends, because it gave her some more people that she knew. In athletics it was more of names, faces, and a person to play a sport with, not really do much else. She laughed when Cale said he didn’t like to brag about himself. That was probably true, so she wasn’t doubting that, but it showed a bit of humility on his part anyways. ”Well that’s very good. I’m glad for that.” she smiled, ”It shows that the productions aren’t poorly done with whoever can show up to an audition and read.” That would be horrible, though she knew of some actors who did just that, yet they still got the job. A terrible performance on their part but their name was well known so it attracted others. It just didn’t seem fair. ”I’m proud of you for getting Javert.” she grinned, ”But are you sure you don’t mind sparing a ticket for me? I’m sorry your parents can’t come and watch though, they’ll be missing out I’m sure.” The offer of a free ticket was nice, but Lindsey hoped she didn’t make Cale feel as if he had to give her his spare ticket that he just so happened to have. She took a seat next to him on the bench and set her stuff on the ground. ”This is very nice. I’m shocked more people don’t come here. But don’t worry, I’ll keep it a secret.” she said.

Maybe Cale was just business-illiterate. Some people were computer-illiterate, unable to figure out how to do anything but play solitaire or open Microsoft Word, so why couldn't there be a such thing as business-illiterate. It seemed to him like much of the industry was common sense more than anything, but to delve deeper is where the serious thinking and analyzing occurred. Still, Cale couldn't seem to get a handle on much of anything. He could memorize information but he wasn't really learning it, which defeated the whole purpose. "You think so? Maybe I'm just a lost cause." As his middle-aged, balding, business tutor put it so nicely just a few days ago. He appreciated Lindsey's offer to help, at first considering turning it down out of embarrassment. However, he already revealed how little he knew so what was the harm in letting her teach him. "Hey, if you're willing to take the time and make the effort, then so am I." He was already taking the time and effort, but he felt like it was wasted. Maybe it was just the teaching methods he wasn't liking, maybe if Lindsey's approach was better suited for his learning style he could turn everything around.
Cale dismissed Lindsey's covert objection with a wave of his hand. "Don't worry about it, I'm glad to find homes for them. I'd hate to let them go to waste." Because if he held out for his parents that is exactly what would happen. He wanted them to go to someone who would appreciate the show. He laughed when Lindsey voiced her condolences about his parents being unable to attend. "They haven't come to one of my productions since I said I wanted to pursue a career in acting. Now that I'm in college they use distance as an excuse, but I'm not allowed to when they have their ridiculous parties." There was one coming up in the not too distant future and Cale was never too shy to voice his distaste. "It's just a good thing I don't hold their opinions in very high regard, or I'd never stop being disappointed." Some might think that was a hypocritical statement seeing as how he dated the girls his parents chose and took the classes his parents wanted, but that was all just to appease them and get them off his back. Never did he consider marrying the arrangements or dropping his love of acting. It was an issue of keeping the peace. He was simply humoring them until which time he graduated college and was ready to start his life as a bachelor in Manhattan, or maybe Los Angeles, or perhaps somewhere less cliche.
Cale reached down into his bag to pull out his notebook and the pen he dropped down in it somewhere. "I thank you for that kind gesture, I was considering the alternative but you seem like a trustworthy person so I'm willing to share such sacred space." He chuckled, flipping back his notebook to the page he had open in class. "So, what are you working toward in the business field? Maybe becoming the next Bill Gates?" He often wrongly assumed anyone who was in the field of business was looking to become a multi-billionaire. Along with being business-illiterate he also seemed to be narrow minded about such things.
