-----Mykayla would have never thought that so much would have changed within a year. Last year on her birthday, things had been so different. She had been a single girl, and her birthday had consisted of partying it up with her girlfriends and enjoying life like there would be tomorrow. Of course her brothers had gotten involved, as well as many of her other friends, but that was just how that group operated. This year she was turning twenty-three, and her whole life had seemed to change. Kay had found out she had cancer, discovered she was pregnant, and gotten married all in one year, and as she sat there in a chair located on the deck of one of her favorite restaurants in town, she knew she wouldn’t change a thing. The cancer was taking its toll on the birthday girl, the natural glow she always had fading from his skin and her sometimes overwhelming energy level faltering, but even so she had accepted her illness and kept moving. Kay’s mind rarely wondered to the cancer, but as her eyes gazed out over the beach and ocean, it was impossible for her to not think about all the changes that had been made. Her belly was so round she looked like she would surely go into labor any day, but she still had two months to go. However, it was the baby that was growing inside of her that brought her back to the present by kicking, her bright blue eyes glancing down as her son stretched and moved inside before she looked to the seat across from her where her friend Brody Whitter had just retaken his seat, placing drinks he had gotten from the bar in front of them. Of course he would drink on his twenty-first birthday, and while Kay couldn’t join him, she would take that nice strawberry smoothie. “Well there you are. I was beginning to think that you had either gotten lost or that you had decided to bail on me on our birthday!” she teased, smiling at him although the smile was rather weak. “But thank you.” She took a drink, and then looked back to Brody. “It’s such a nice day! I’m glad we decided to come here for our lunch. It’s been too long since we’ve gotten to do something like this.” Not that either of them didn’t know why. Things had been tough for the duo, but Mykayla was thankful to have Brody back as her friend. brody / amber!

just waste time chasing cars twenty one. it was the last major birthday before you hit thirty, and quite frankly brody whitter was going to live this day up to its fullest potential. there was absolutely no surprise to him that he was going to be able to get away with this one. he knew where he and his best friend were sitting but he went to the bar to get some alcohol and get the pretty blonde something nonalcoholic. after all she was freaking huge, being pregnant and all, but it was who he was. kay would always have a special place in his heart, even if they fought and had their hardships, they always managed to find their way back to each other and work through their issues. but he was waiting for the damn drinks, and this bartender was taking her sweet ass time to make the strawberry smootie. when he finally had the drinks in his hand he was walking back out to the deck and say kay looking out to the water. she was always breathtaking and he was glad that they had gotten past a lot of what had happened so that they could do this birthday date like they have for the past three years. hearing her voice brought a smile to his lips before he had to explain himself. “you would not believe how slow that bartender was! and i would never ditch our birthday date.” hell he was lucky to even be out on this date after he had acted a while back. he didn’t deserve the woman that sat across from him at all, and brody knew that all too well. “it’s the least i could do for the birthday girl. you know that, but yes i am glad we got to do our birthday date. though i’m sure your husband is none to thrilled with it. then again, ames isn’t either. she is a jealous little thing.” he thought it was absolutely adorable how amy thought she was less than mykayla, because amy was all his. he loved that girl more than anything else in the world, and sure mykayla would be a special piece of his heart but amy was where that heart was. she held it all and would never let it go. tagged for: mykayla rachelle mccarthy // word count: 389 // notes: birthday! // credit: to luna love bug <3

-----As Mykayla looked over at Brody, she was reminded of a time when she had thought that he would be the one she would always be with. Sure, there had also been times when he had made her so made that she had gone home with tears in her eyes, and times when she had just wanted to give up on him, but then Brody had always made a comeback, showing her just why they needed each other. She had loved him, and there were definitely times when it was easy to see why. Kay knew that she was blessed to be able to have him in her life even now as a friend. Not a lot of couples can make that transition, and there had been a time very recently that she hadn’t been so sure that she and Brody were an exception. But, they had made it and now they were there on their birthday, sharing in what had been a tradition for three years now. She just shook her head as he told her about the slow bartender, Kay having just been teasing and not minding the fact that she had to sit there and wait on her smoothie a little longer than usual at all. Things were different this year, though, and Mykayla had wondered if this would get to happen at all. As Brody said, there was Greyson and Amy to consider now, but she was really glad that things had worked out. “Grey wasn’t too happy that I was meeting you for lunch instead of him when he and I eat lunch together every day, but I told him that he could share me since I’m not going to the party tonight.” At the bit about Amy, Kay felt the small smile that had been on her lips fade away. That poor girl…. Kay hated that Amy was so insecure and that things kept happening that didn’t really give her any peace of mind. “I really wish she wouldn’t be, though. I’m nothing to be jealous of.” But Kay knew where Amy was coming from. When a guy stays best friends with an ex, it was bound to raise suspicion even if there was absolutely nothing going on. And Kay couldn’t even imagine where Amy thought she wasn’t good enough, but that was a different conversation entirely. “So what did you get to drink?” she asked, maybe somewhat randomly, but Kay did wish that she could be there to celebrate being legal to drink with Brody. brody / amber!

just waste time chasing cars brody knew how hard it was on the two of them some days. there had been days in his past that he had really wanted to be with this girl for the rest of his life. hell up until he started dating amy that had been the case.it was because of amy that he was able to move past not only ashton but mykayla as well. though the two birthday people had been strained over the past weeks because he had reverted back to his asshole ways. those days had long since left, but it was just a rough thing to get through. but today he was not going to think about those bad times, but remember why he had a birthday date. the girl that shared his birthday was a special woman, and he was thankful to share this lunch with her. just because he needed something to make up to her for being a jackass. brody nodded his head whenever she said about the party. he had almost completely forgotten about it, but the trent brothers throwing a party, and if micah is in on it brody was going to be a sloppy mess. “you know i’m still not happy that you aren’t coming to the party. you are supposed to lose me this time, remember? since i did such a good job of watching you on your twenty first.” his laughter filled their little table, but he understood why greyson would not be too happy about his wife’s exploit with the ex. then again this ex had not done a very good job of being a friend so it was whatever at this point. though how amy felt mattered to him, but he didn’t understand why she didn’t think that she was good enough. that would never make sense to the young man. “i wish she wouldn’t be either, but it’s amy. she is going to do what she wants. but she has me all night and has to make sure your brothers don’t kill me. so it should be entertaining. and you are something to be jealous of, because if you hadn’t run off and gotten married we could have had a chance.” a small smile pulled at his lips remember the first time he had taken kay out for her birthday, but it was those days that he liked to remember not the bad ones. “though i’m kind of glad you got married. i really do love her, and i never would have known if you didn’t get married.” but then her absent minded question caught him off guard. “captain and coke. what did you think i got? i remember the shots you had to do with kade and jared, and i am not getting forced into making myself sick. i will keep to the basics. but what’s new baby mama, how you feeling?” he was finally able to talk about this baby without reverting to his asshole nature, which was actually a feet for him and showed just how much this friendship meant to him. tagged for: mykayla rachelle mccarthy // word count: 527 // notes: birthday! // credit: to luna love bug <3

-----Kay really did feel bad that she was going to have to miss Brody’s twenty-first birthday party. She could remember back on her twenty-first that they had said all kinds of crazy and funny things that they would have to do for his once he got there, but most of those ideas had been made with the idea in mind that they would still be together. And, the things that they still could have done being apart were all ultimately hindered by the fact that the young woman was not pregnant and sick with cancer. Things hadn’t timed out right, but Mykayla had no doubts that Brody would have a good time without her tonight. After all, her brothers were in charge of this party and with the way things were looking, Brody wasn’t going to remember half of it anyway. Kay had to laugh along with him, though. “You know that I would love to be there, but I wouldn’t be any fun, anyway. This girl is usually in bed by nine o’clock easy these days. And I have no doubt that you will be able to lose yourself at this party without having me there to do it for you. But you know, if you hadn’t lost me at my party and let Grey be the one to find me, things might have been different.” Kay wasn’t sure if Brody was aware of this or not, but that night had been what had led to Kay realizing her feelings for Greyson, thus leading to the end of their relationship. She was merely teasing him, though. She believed that everyone was meant for one person and one person only. Her person was obviously Greyson, and she would have found her way to him whether Brody had lost her that night at the party or not. Then they were talking about Amy, Kay still hating that she inspired so many feelings of uncertainty in the younger girl, but Brody was right. No matter what Kay and Brody said, Amy was going to feel these things; it was up to her to work through them and realize she had nothing to worry about or be jealous of. She would find her own sense of security eventually. Mykayla only shot him a look when he said that there could have still been a chance between them had she not realized her love for Greyson and gotten married. Somewhere deep inside, she knew that what he said was true. If Greyson had left her and decided he didn’t want her, Kay would have ended up with Brody. It was as simple as that. But, things had worked out and Brody had found Amy. Kay smiled as he doted on his lovely girlfriend, but then she had been her random self, asking about his drink. “Oh, I didn’t know. I was just curious, and a little bit sad that I can’t join you!” she admitted, but again, she would gladly forfeit alcohol for the safety of her baby. She could only grin at the memories Brody dredged up, talking about the shots she had done at her party with her brothers and how drunk she had gotten. She hoped that Brody had some sense about him tonight while he was partying it up with their friends and family, but somehow, she doubted he would. “I’m okay. Just…tired, a lot of the time. And there was a little scare but everything turned out fine. Grey and I actually found out what our baby is. Would you like to know?” She hoped Brody wouldn’t worry about her illness and instead focus on the hint of excitement that was in her voice as she spoke about the baby, hoping he wanted to know because she didn’t know if she could not tell him about it now. brody / amber!

just waste time chasing cars there was something about mykayla not coming to their birthday party that irked him slightly. yes he understood that the pregnant woman would need her sleep, especially with how far along she was now, but it was still their birthday party. for the past three years it had been their lunch date and then followed by the party that her brothers were always in charge of. it just wasn’t going to be the same without her; though he probably wouldn’t remember anything from that night except what people told him. hell mykayla’s twenty-first had been a hilarious blur of events that he did not remember. “you know you are always fun mykayla, but fine. don’t come to the party. it’s not fun if you don’t lose me, but i am sure that amy will be more than happy to lose me. but if i die at the hands of your brothers, i am blaming you entirely since you aren’t going to be there to save me.” he smirked slightly, because she hoped that he was teasing her. her brothers were definitely going to send him into the land of the drunken dead. it was always how things went with those brothers, but right now he was going to enjoy what time he had with kay. it was few and far between these days that the two of them got to just be their crazy selves, and he really missed these days. but her bringing up grey irked him still. brody was never going to like the man nor was he going to trust him and though he finally felt put back together he was pissed about how he had gotten the shit beat out of him in his own home. whenever he said there a was a chance for them to be together he had been teasing slightly, though he knew that if things had been different that the two of them would still very much be together. brody and kay were just that couple, but they would never get that chance to be amazing again. though right now brody couldn’t say he was sad about it. he knew all about kay’s idea of the perfect match, and he knew that amy was his. she was exactly what he needed and he would never be as happy as he was with her. he smiled at her randomness and he was a little sad that she wasn’t able to join him. “well it would be a lot more fun if you were drinking along with me, but i guess you can just live through me and my drinking today. sound good?” he smiled brightly as he took a sip of his drink appreciating that he can do this legally now. he listened as she spoke about what had been going on in her life. “what do you mean by a scare? what happened? and i know that you aren’t going to be able to not tell me now that you know what the munchkin is, so out with it? do i get to be crazy uncle brody to a little niece or nephew?” things would be a little rough whenever that baby entered the world since he was still unable to see his own, but he was going to focus on mykayla and remember that this was her special moment. he could put aside any feelings for her after almost ruining them to begin with.

-----Kay was more than certain that her brothers would have a good party going for Brody tonight. She was glad that Kade, Jared, and Hunter had all accepted Brody like they had, though they hadn’t really cared much for him in the beginning. Eventually, though, they had warmed up to Brody and they were all pretty decent friends with the younger man now, though none of them would hesitate in kicking his ass if he put so much as one finger out of line. It had always been that way when he was dating Mykayla, and the same rules applied now while he was seeing Amy, a girl that the Trent’s all viewed to be another little sister to them. But, the guys were all on good terms now and the party was going to be a lot of fun. She giggled as Brody talked about Amy losing him, knowing just how much alcohol was to be involved and having no doubt that there would be interesting stories to tell after this one went down. “Oh come on! They didn’t let you die before and they know better to let you die now and have to put with Amy.” It felt good to joke and tease like this with him again, and it really did improve Kay’s overall feeling as time went on. Being out and about like this usually did make her feel better even if she usually ended up paying for it later when she was so worn out and exhausted later on. She could almost feel the tension creep in when there was mention of Greyson and the fact that if only things were different than she and Brody may have one day been that forever couple, but Kay was grateful for the fact that it passed rather quickly and didn’t start another feud. She genuinely appreciated Brody’s acceptance of her relationship and her choices that she had made even if he didn’t fully agree with her on everything. And of course she would deal with his drinking for the day, because it was his twenty-first birthday and he deserved to let loose and have a little fun, but Kay did narrow her eyes playfully at him as she took another sip of her smoothie. But then the conversation turned to her and the baby, and Kay picked up on the hint of worry in Brody’s voice as he asked about this so called scare. “I thought I had had lost the baby, but everything is fine, Brody.” It certainly hadn’t felt fine then, not until the doctor had let her hear her little one’s heartbeat. She couldn’t hold back the smile as she was told that she could tell Brody the gender, though. “A nephew, it’s a boy!” And Kay really couldn’t imagine her baby being anything less than a beautiful little boy that looked just like his daddy. “We’ve even started picking out names, though I really can’t make up my mind. His name just has to be perfect.” And she was sure that she and Grey would pick out the perfect name for their son, but it was going to take some time. brody / amber!

just waste time chasing cars brody had to admit that he enjoyed teasing mykayla, it was how the two of them worked. he knew that the only reason that the two of them had made it through her birthday party was because if he would have died mykayla would not have been a happy camper. this time around there was no one to really protect him, because he knew amy would be there having a good time and not looking after him. he would be at the mercy of kade, jared, and hunter trent. “i didn’t die because you were there to save me! your brothers knew better than to let me drink myself to death. oh you don’t know what they will do anything to protect me. though amy is always a good back up. who knows what will happen.” he smiled a little bit knowing that he could easily get away with teasing the young woman. talking about grey still got under his skin, but it was just how things were. he didn’t really understand it but he tried to keep his opinions to himself. he didn’t want to hurt kay again by saying anything that would ruin their friendship again. he had at least learned to live with the fact that this was her decision and no matter what she did, he was going to have to deal with it. it was her life and she was free to do whatever she wanted. he may not agree with all of her decisions, but he highly doubted that she was alright with all of the decisions that he had made in the beginning. “you what?!” brody was in complete shock as her voice filled his ears. he could not believe that she had not told him about this before now. “you know if you weren’t pregnant i would slap you for not telling me! kay, that isn’t cool to not tell me these things. next thing i’ll know you’ll becoming home with said baby and i will never know you were in the hospital.” when she did things like this it really hurt him, because she had failed to tell him about her cancer those many months ago. a grin started to pull to his lips whenever she said about a boy. all of those trents seemed to be having boys. he laughed lightly. “you trents seem to be only be able to produce boys. first randi has dean, now you have a little man. though i am sure these boys are going to be badass like their parents.” he couldn’t help it. it was just kind of funny to think about it. “what names are you thinking about? or are you keeping it a secret? i mean randi and jared had that whole not knowing the gender thing. but dean is a kickass name, so i’m sure your kid will have one too. you could always just name him after his crazy uncle brody.” he was just being a goofball now, but he missed these days. he missed his best friend.

-----Despite Brody’s current good standing with her brothers, he did seem to be worried about how this party would turn out. Mykayla knew that any crazy ass stunts that would be pulled tonight would be done entirely out of good nature and no harm intended toward her ex-boyfriend, but that didn’t mean that he would come out of it completely unharmed. Again, she knew that it was bound to be interesting and party that one shouldn’t miss, but her current state of health did not permit for such activities. Otherwise, she would have at least gone to be his voice of reason and to keep an eye on him, but he was going to have to depend on Amy for that now. “I’m sure that whatever happens, you will survive and have a lot of good tales to tell, Brody Whitter. Besides, it won’t be a good party if the birthday boy doesn’t make it, and my brothers don’t throw bad parties.” Kade and Jared were party masterminds. Hunter was the organizer behind all the plotting and scheming, and together the Trent brothers were a pretty unstoppable force once they put their minds to something. That’s how it had been when they had done her birthday party and their own parties before it. She was just glad that they were doing something for Brody because he deserved a night to be a little reckless and to have some fun. Kay, on the other hand, would be in her bed, snuggled up to her husband with either the TV or a book to entertain her before she fell asleep but she was perfectly okay with that. Brody, however, was not okay with the fact that she didn’t tell him about this scare with the baby, and Kay’s smile faded on her lips. Her eyes were immediately apologetic, knowing that he must feel like she kept so much from him and that wasn’t fair or even right of her most of the time. “That’s not true. I will make sure you are one of the first to know when I’m having this baby, I promise! And I’m sorry I didn’t say anything. It’s just been hard, and everyone’s so worried about me and the baby anyway, but I know that’s not a good enough reason… I really am sorry, Brody.” And she hoped that he could hear the sincerity in her voice because she didn’t want to hurt him anymore than she had. Kay was glad when the topic was onto her little man, and she had to grin when Brody said that Dean and her child were bound to be badasses. “You think I’m a badass now, huh? That’s funny.” Especially considering that Kay didn’t look threatening or intimidating at all. She was sweet and kind, and nothing like what she would think would go along with that term, but this was Brody talking. Mykayla laughed at the idea of naming her son Brody. “Right, because my husband would love that one so much. And it’s not that we’re keeping it a secret, it’s just that we don’t know yet. I think I change my mind everyday on what names I like, and Grey has to like it too. I’ve been thinking about Kyler, but I still don’t know. What I do know is that I am thinking about asking Amy to be the godmother. How do you think she’d like that?” She smiled, knowing that Amy would probably be thrilled and thinking her a perfect choice for something like this, and it was something that weighed on Kay’s mind a lot considering that her odds of seeing this child through even the early ages of life weren’t fantastic right now. brody / amber!

just waste time chasing cars brody whitter was more than aware of the dangers that would be in store for him that evening. one must remember that for the past three years he has been surrounded by trent’s non stop and he knows the menacing minds of kade, jared and hunter. though their parties were never ones to miss, and it was because of one of those famous beach parties that he ended up in the arms of his current relationship. he smirked at mykayla as she spoke, because he was certain that there would definitely be stories to tell about the workings of this party. “you know what, i probably will have stories. then again there is the possibility of kade and jared having to tell of how i died pulling some stupid ass prank with them. just imagine poor broken amy over this. hunting for me and then finds me dead in a ditch. it will be so sad.” he laughed lightly, knowing that the trents would never let him croak because of that fact. amy was another little sister to them, so why would they put her through that kind of heartbreak. but just as quickly as his laughter had filled the air it was gone. he had a lot of issues with mykayla keeping secrets about her health condition from him. not only had she hidden her cancer but now this scare with his little niece or nephew he was having serious issues with it. “it is so true! you say you tell me everything, but let me ask you miss thing, who was it that wasn’t going to tell me about her cancer? or who didn’t tell me that she ran off and got married or that she was pregnant at all? that would be all you, so you have to understand my doubt with you telling me about this little man coming into the world. knowing my luck i’ll hear it from amy.” he was obviously teasing, but he was trying to make a legitimate point to her. ever since her and grey had become an item, brody had slipped way behind and faded into the shadows. he never heard the information from the source anymore, and he missed his close knit relationship with the birthday girl. hearing her go on about baby names was cute, and kyler was definitely an odd name. not one that he had ever heard about, but his face lit up when amy was going to be the godmother. “are you crazy?! amy would love that more than anything else in the world! all she talks about is everyone having babies, and i’m sorry but i’m not doing that one again anytime soon. but you don’t need to worry about godparents.” brody’s voice was stern making sure that she remembered her promise to him. she had to come out of this thing with flying colors for him to be remotely okay with this. he couldn’t lose her and he was sure the same thoughts were going through her husband’s head.

-----It really was too amusing to the now twenty-three-year-old to listen to her friend as he stressed about and poked fun at this party at the same time. Mykayla knew that there were legitimate reasons for him to be a bit concerned, but Brody should know that no real harm would come to him at the hands of the Trent brothers. Tyler Orsino would probably even play nice; it was Micah that a person had to watch out for and sometimes watch what they were saying around, and Brody was Mike’s special list for dating Amy Orsino. It was an interesting dynamic for sure, but Kay was confident that Brody would come out of the party unscathed. He may have the worst hangover of his life, but that would be about it. “What, you really think the boys will leave you in a ditch? They have more class than that,” she teased after taking another sip of her strawberry smoothie. “If Micah’s involved, they’ll completely dispose of your body so Amy won’t have to worry about finding it.” She gave a playful wink then, knowing that the idea of Micah was probably really intimidating especially considering that no one really knew just how far that man would go. She did have to pick on Brody just a little bit, though. It wouldn’t be Kay if she didn’t. She was making a mental note to ask Tyler to take his video camera, though, because she wanted to be able to see some of this craziness that was going to go down. When Brody was making his remarks on how Kay tended to keep things from him recently, she couldn’t say that she could argue with most of it. She had had no intention of telling Brody, or anyone, about her cancer but only because remission seemed so promising. She hadn’t told him that she was pregnant right away, but only because she knew that it would hurt him and how much it would worry him to know that she would stop treatment. “Hey! You were the first person after Grey that I told about the baby! And no one knew I got married until after the fact. It just took a little longer to get to you. But I understand that I shouldn’t keep things from people, even if I think it’ll help them. I just don’t like it when you all worry about me. And Brody Whitter, you will know when this baby is coming even if I have to call you myself on my way into the delivery room. Got it? No more guilt tripping on our birthday.” It was easy to play it all off as a lot of teasing, but Mykayla really did appreciate Brody’s honesty. She knew that she kept him in the dark a lot, and while she did it thinking it was best for him, she knew that they were both missing how close they had once been. It was just that Kay had spent so long tiptoeing around her friend, trying to figure out what she could or couldn’t say that it was almost habit by now. Mykayla was thankful for a new topic, and glad that Brody approved of Amy being Baby McCarthy’s godmother. Amy really was a perfect choice, and Kay knew that the younger girl would be thrilled with such an honor. However, there was that stern note in Brody’s voice that got her attention right away when he said she had no need to worry about appointing godparents for her son. “I know, but everyone picks out godparents just in case, right?” she asked, trying to play it off as though she weren’t picking out the official helpers in the effort of raising her child in the event that she did not survive this cancer. In the beginning, the blonde mother-to-be had been more hopeful, but as the months passed her by and her strength and health began to fade, she couldn’t be quite as hopeful. Brody was looking at her now the same way that Greyson did when the subject came up, the look in his eyes telling her that she had to make it for their world to keep on spinning. It broke her heart, but she found a smile just for Brody as she reached over and let her hand cover his. “I’ll be okay.” brody / amber!

just waste time chasing cars all he could do was spare her a glance to make her realize that yes, he indeed thought that the boys would leave him dead in a ditch. though he should know that they would have better class and would probably throw his body in the ocean at least for no one to find. brody whitter knew that the trents at least tolerated him, hell they were throwing him a party for christ sake. they obviously didn’t want him dead for whatever reason that may be. this would not be brody and mykayla if there was not teasing of him dying at the hands of either the eldest trent or orsino. both of them seemed to have their eyes on him for whatever reasons that may be, and he constantly had to watch his back to make sure micah wasn’t about to kill him. “this is true. micah cares about amy too much, but if there is a story about me up and leaving town don’t believe it. it is a carefully orchestrated ploy by those brothers of yours to cover up my death.” he played the innocent eyes, but he was joking of course. there was still some worry that he would not make it out of this night alive, but he really was looking forward to his birthday presents from his girlfriend. what he really was looking forward to was what any male was looking forward to on his birthday. it was just how it was, and he was glad that would be with amy this year. their conversation took a more serious turn, and he was being totally honest with her, maybe to the point were it was brutal, but she deserved this. mykayla trent had always tried to cover and spare people’s feelings so that they didn’t worry, but what she failed to see was that it only hurt more that she did it. he hoped that she understood and her words seemed to show that she did minorly. “your damn right it does. kay, you really need to stop thinking about what the situation is going to do to other people and let them be there for you! don’t you remember how hard it was for me to find out you had cancer? and then everything else because you tried to keep it from me? you may not like it, but it is what we need, well at least i do.” he couldn’t help but shake his head and laugh at her all to serious tone about him being on the call list for this baby. he couldn’t help but find a little humor in the situation of a very pregnant mykayla making a phone call to tell him that his nephew was about to be born. “i’ll keep that in mind; do not ignore calls from mykayla. could be her going into labor.” he laughed lightly and nodded his head understanding that there would be no more guilt tripping on their birthday. or at least for now. as this conversation progressed he could not help the somber tones in it. the thought of losing mykayla broke his heart more than any one person could understand. it was just too much to think about, especially since she had to stop taking her treatments because of it. he heard her logic and nodded slightly. it was true about the whole godparents thing, but he knew why mykayla was doing it. he looked at her with somber eyes making sure she understood that he was not okay with this. if it came down to it he would pick her every time; a life without mykayla was hardly worth being a part of. he didn’t know if he could really do this whole thing without her. “you damn well better be. you promised me, and if you break that promise mykayla there is going to be hell to pay. i can’t lose you.” part of brody whitter would always love and care about mykayla and that was just how it was. nothing was going to change it and he could not live without her even if she was just his best friend. he just could not imagine a life without her. “besides who is going to protect me from the crazy that is your family if you aren’t around? and who is going to love that little baby of yours like his momma? no one can live up to you, and no one can live without you. besides we have to keep our birthday tradition alive.” that was why he was playing with the box that was in his fingers now. he took it out and slid it over to her. “it’s your present, baby mama. you needed something special this year.” in the box was a charm that was to go on the bracelet that he had bought her three years ago. this year it was a little pacifier to signify how her life had changed, and even if he was not a major part of it brody knew what was important to her.

-----How this conversation had gotten this far, Kay had no idea but it was still entertaining no matter how she looked at it. Poor Brody was going to have to get drunk so he could even enjoy his party without looking over his shoulder at all times, worrying about what was coming his way at the hands of all of her crazy brothers. And, although Mykayla had mostly just been joking about the boys having more class than to leave his body in a ditch, there was a part of her that knew Micah and Tyler had probably had their hands in those kinds of situations before. She didn’t know the specifics nor did she ever care to know them, but Brody really need not worry. She did have to giggle a little, though. “Okay, I’ll try not to fall for it, but somehow I don’t think a lot of people are going to argue if Micah says that in some drunk haze you decided to up and leave the party and no one knew where you went.” That would almost be funny, and something Kay could see someone easily doing. Plenty of people wondered down the beach or off into the woods when they were at these raging parties, only to be discovered the next day in God only knew what kinds of conditions. She hoped that wouldn’t be Brody this time, and she knew that there would be no such tale because he was going to survive the party. It was still just cute to joke about. However, the other topic of this conversation was not so cute and was much more serious. Kay knew that she had inadvertently hurt a lot of people, and that Brody was one of the few that were willing to be so brutally honest with her about it. Things had just been so easy to hide, though, and she had thought that she was going to come through this all without a scratch to show for it. Then things had gotten more complicated and she hadn’t had a choice, and while she knew that Brody understood her choices she always realized that he had been hurt by them. Kay was in no way confrontational, though, and when people took this tone of voice with her she, more often than not, chose to be the submissive one. She didn’t like being scolded, especially when she knew that she deserved it. “I understand, but all I can do right now is that I’m sorry for hurting you when I didn’t mean to.” Then a little smile came to her lips. “Am I forgiven?” She didn’t believe that Brody was ever truly mad at her for her offenses, but she had to be sure that things were completely okay between them. Then she narrowed her pretty blue eyes at him playfully. “You shouldn’t be ignoring my calls to begin with, mister!” Because that would just be wrong. She grinned at him, liking how easily this conversation could transition from serious to happy, but wishing that things could stay light and easy. Talking about her cancer was always rough, especially with those like Brody who were just entirely too close. People like Kade, Hunter and Micah, even Mykayla’s mother, Marion, they all handled this well. They were optimistic and strong for her. But then there was the other end of the spectrum that included Kay’s father, Jared, Tyler, and Brody that were softer and more fearful. They almost always managed to bring tears to Mykayla’s eyes and this time was no exception when Brody spoke. She gave his hand that she held in hers a light squeeze, trying to be reassuring. The tears pricked at the back of her eyes as he talked about her baby, and how no one could take her place. It was heart wrenching. But, then he was sliding a little box her way and Kay picked it up, shooting him a look because he didn’t need to get her anything, but her delicate fingers removed the lid, eyes lighting up when she saw what was inside. “It’s perfect, Brody…” she said, still gazing down at the little charm that would go perfectly on the bracelet he had given her so long ago. “Come here,” she told him with another smile, watching as he did as he was told and scooted around the table until he was closer. Then Kay leaned in and let her lips find his in a sweet, pure little kiss. It only lasted for a second, but a hug just simply would not suffice and she really didn’t see the point in making the effort to do that right now. “Thank you…now, you’re going to take this and you’re not going to say anything about it,” she said as she pulled a fifty dollar bill from her wallet and handed it to him. “I can’t be there to supply you with some more liquor for your party, and while I’m sure the boys have a lot of it covered, I want you to buy something you really like. Call it enabling your impending alcoholism, but you did the same for me once.” She really did wish that she had more to give him, but she knew he’d be happy with a simple kiss and money to support his drinking. And maybe something else. “And, from now on I promise to be completely honest with you, even if it kills me to tell you because things aren’t going to be easy for a long time…but I don’t want to shut you out when I’ll probably need you the most. I know it’s not much of a gift…” But it was still something she knew he would appreciate more than anything else. brody / amber!

just waste time chasing cars above all things he needed mykayla to have his back if he were to somehow disappear. there was something about micah orsino that just scared the shit out of him, and even after speaking to him about everything it just did not put him any more at ease. he knew that if that man wanted him dead he would be. he rolled his eyes at her whenever she started speaking. “listen here miss. i am counting on you to make sure amy knows that i died, not that i ran off and left her. because if i run off in my “drunk haze” i would come back at some point there is too much to lose here in this town.” which was the complete and honest truth because brody had the two women that meant the world of him. amy and mykayla meant more to him that just about anything, but above that he had his son that he truly wanted to get to know and be a part of his life. too many years had gone by without there being anything there, and he would be damned if he left this town without getting to know ben. he wanted to stay on this side of the conversation for eternity, laughing at everything and not go to the seriousness that was underlaying this conversation. this was something that needed to be discussed between them because he was truly worried about her. there had been days where he was truly wondering if she was going to be able to make it through. mykayla was that girl that hated to have people worry about her, and brody knew and understood that. he only hoped that she understood how much it hurt him to feel that he was the last one to know. she knew how important he was to her and that was all brody whitter could ask for. “i know you didn’t mean to babe, i just need you to know that it is hard to be there for you when you don’t tell anyone what is going on.” his eyes were soft as he spoke to her because he didn’t want to hurt her in the least. all he wanted was to make her understood where he came from. her question was enough to make him smile, and he nodded his head. “of course. i could never stay mad at you and you know that.” he couldn’t help but laugh as she continued on about him ignoring her phone calls. it was true that if he ignored her then he would get an earful, but it brought a smirk to his lips. “i only ignore your calls if i’m a little busy with amy. you know i’m not going to answer the phone while i’m having sex now don’t you? considering i think a certain little blonde got pretty upset when i did that to her.” he couldn’t help but laugh now, knowing full well that he had gotten yelled at for answering his phone while he had made love to mykayla way back in the day. but whenever her cancer was always brought up there was tears in his eyes. he was just not willing to deal with the idea of mykayla leaving this world always hurt him. he could see the tears pricking at her eyes and it was just hard to watch her like this. but as her face lit up with the charm that was just for her he couldn’t help but feel better. her smile always lit up the world, and it was just how kay was. “i’m glad you like it.” but he leaned in for a what he thought was a hug, but was greeted with one of her signature mykayla sweet kisses. he missed those on some days, but he was grateful for it. they just meant so much more than a hug. when that little kiss ended he looked at her and frowned. “absolutely not! i’m not taking your money, kay. all i’m going to do is put it back and make you buy something for my nephew that you need. because i don’t want your money!” he pushed the fifty back at her and refused to take it. it just wouldn’t feel right to take it from her, and he smiled brightly. “thank you. i know it is hard for you to do that, but mykayla that makes my heart smile. because now i never have to worry about you lying or omitting anything.” it was the best birthday present that he could have asked for. tagged for: mykayla rachelle mccarthy // word count: 794 // notes: birthday! // credit: to luna love bug <3

-----Kay took another drink of that strawberry smoothie, her and baby obviously satisfied with how cold and flavorful it was. She was glad that she had gotten this, and also glad that she and Brody were getting to spend this time together and have this kind of conversation. There was a time when she saw or talked to him every single day, knowing everything that was going on in his life and him knowing just as much about her. But, now that their lives were moving on it was more difficult to squeeze in this kind of quality time. It made Mykayla a little sad to think that it had taken their birthdays to make them sit down and talk like this, but that really was how things went. People grew up, and they grew apart. Right now, though, she had to sigh and roll her eyes at her friend. “Fine. If any odd stories come from this party I will be the first to know that they are all lies and that Micah has done something to you. I’ll make sure the truth is known.” Now she couldn’t stifle a giggle. It was funny to see just how anxious Brody was for this party just knowing that Micah Orsino was going to be there and that her brothers were behind it all. However, she had just given her word that she would look out for him and Brody’s mind should be at ease. Well, at least about his birthday party. Kay knew that she herself gave him plenty of reasons to worry even if she tried to keep it all from him. It turned out that her trying to protect him only made things worse, but Mykayla would try to not be so afraid of hurting him with the truth now that she saw how much her omissions hurt. He wanted to be there for her, and all she could do was nod in response to that one. It was that old Trent pride and stubbornness making itself known in the young blonde; she and her family were always the type to hold things in and try to deal with the weight of the world on their own. Kay was never usually quite as bad as the rest of them, but it was still a trait she possessed and right now it seemed to be her biggest flaw. She knew that Brody would forgive her for it, though, but his next remarks about ignoring her phone calls had her a little speechless at first. Kay was not quite as shy when it came to sex as she used to be, but she still didn’t need to know about Brody and Amy or have her and Brody’s old sex life rehashed. He was laughing, and she eventually gave in with a small grin on her lips. Yes, a certain little blonde had been very angry and annoyed at him for that one, but she had had every right to be and he knew it. “Well, I’m glad that you learned something. But if you miss me calling to tell you I’m having the baby because you’re too busy to answer, you just remember that’s your fault,” she teased now, laughing softly along with him. That would be the one and only exception to missing her calls now when she was obviously ready to pop. Brody’s gift to her was really touching, and Kay had thought that giving him some money on his party would be a good idea, but of course he had to be stubborn and push the fifty dollar bill back at her. Kay frowned. “Come on, Brody. I feel bad enough that I can’t go to your party. The least you can let me do is help you out a little bit on it!” And, she pushed the fifty back at Brody although she knew that wasn’t going to be resolved so easily, but at least he seemed to really appreciate her last offering of full and complete honesty from here on out. She smiled, thankful for that much before she reached over and took his hand before placing it on her belly where little Baby McCarthy was choosing to make his presence known. “Feel that? I think he likes that idea, too.” brody / amber!
